I graduated from Virginia Tech with a Bachelor of Science in Nutrition, Foods, & Exercise (Pre-Med Option). I embarked on my adventure into health care when I was a student athletic trainer for Division I Football & Softball at Virginia Tech. I slowly diversified myself by maintaining several positions in the Department of Recreational Sports & Fitness. I was a Facilities Manager, Personal Trainer, Program Developer, & Health Educator.

When I completed my degree , I obtained my Personal Trainer certification from th
e American College of Sports Medicine (ACSM) as well as a Yoga Fit Instructor certification. Shortly after, I moved to the U.S. Virgin Islands where I was involved with promoting health & fitness throughout the island as a Health & Physical Education instructor, Physical Therapy Assistant, Personal Trainer, & Yoga Instructor.

Fitness is a passion of mine and I enjoy it because it is a field where there is always something new to learn. A lot of this knowledge comes from working with a fun and diverse group of clients. I am able to get to know them and help improve their over all well-being. I specialize in yoga, rehabilitative exercise, and weight loss with a focus in nutrition. If you’re looking for a program that helps you help yourself, I’m here for you!

Peter Barnes
Personal Trainer

I was recently transplanted to the DC area by way of New York City. Within the last year I worked at a highly reputable gym in NYC and in following that trend I am now a trainer at Vida.

My passion for fitness came out of a need to prevent premature hypertension at 17 years old. I was told by my doctor that I needed to drop an astronomical amount of body fat to save my health.

My diet was my pitfall. I revolutionized my eating habits and incorporated a self-made exercise regiment. This exercise regiment borrowed ideas from all the fitness magazines I was able to purchase with my savings from stores in Jamaica West Indies where I was living at the time. Within a matter of weeks I was seeing results.

As far as a client base, I have worked mostly and certainly not limited to clients that want to decrease body fat and to gain lean muscle mass. I am a big believer in shaping our bodies to look more aesthetically pleasing which in turn makes us feel better about ourselves.

My goal for my clients as well as myself is total body balance.  I want your lower back just as strong as your abs, quads to hamstrings, biceps to triceps, etc.  Not only does this balance prevent injury, but it creates overall better body symmetry and posture.  Coming out of 8 years of competitive track and field, my style of training ranges from dynamic, explosive movements down to heavy compound movements to increase muscle size and cardio-respiratory training.  I know what it feels like to push your body to the point of injury as well as to top performances.

I AM ALL ABOUT TOP PERFORMANCES!  I design my programs based on my clients goals with the mindset that fitness is a lifestyle and not a repeat New Year's Resolution.  If you can not maintain a fitness and/or health regime throughout the year, then it really should not be started to begin with.  I enjoy combining my previous knowledge of strength and conditioning with my current knowledge of anatomy, physiology and nutrition to assist in creating realistic goals and do-able routines to take my clients to their next level of fitness and higher.  If we are both doing are part, great things WILL happen.

My motto is: LEAVE EVERYTHING ON THE GYM FLOOR!
